HENRY FINKEL - Men's basketball - 1962-1966
Henry J. Finkel, also known as Hank, was born on April 20th, 1942. He attended Holy Name high school in Union City New Jersey. Finkel was a 7-footer who played basketball all four years from 1962 until 1966. He was the center for UD who wore jersey number 15 and was nominated team captain. He was a very skilled and dedicated basketball player who also used his height as a dominate force. Over three seasons he scored a total of 1,968 points where he ranks third for UD’s all time scoring list. Finkel also held records in most field goals made, highest points per game average, most points in a season, and won the White-Allen Most Valuable Player Trophy three years in a row. In 2004 he was nominated to UD’s All-Century Team. Hank was nominated to the all-American team and let his team to the NCAA tournament his senior year as well. Â
His career was only beginning after he graduated Dayton where he went on to play in the NBA. He was drafted in the second round by the LA Lakers. He also played on the San Diego Rockets, and the Boston Celtics. Much of his time was spent playing for Boston where he averaged 5.1 points a game and won a championship in 1974.Â
